Those lucky visitors to Dubrovnik who pass through the small gated hole that pierces the City’s Southern Wall are welcomed to a world of dramatic natural beauty painted in relaxing Mediterranean hues. This special place is known locally as Buža (“BOO-zha”).

In the dialect of Dubrovnik, buža means “hole”. In this case, buža refers to the    hole-in-the-wall that leads to a swimming spot that is a daily stop for many of  the people who live within Dubrovnik's thick, protective ramparts.

During spring and summer, our attractive little café bar is nestled amongst these  rugged rocks that form Dubrovnik's seaward flank. Here you will find  conveniently placed tables at which you may linger over a cold drink while  enjoying the incomparable panorama of the open Adriatic, the historic island of  Lokrum, and the stark hills of Southern Dalmatia.

Buža is not the typical high-tech café bar that blares loud music and turns  natural beauty into something ordinary, something that can be found in any of the world’s tourist venues. Instead, we have striven to retain the particular flavor of this corner of Dubrovnik by using minimal architectural enhancements to transform the steep and otherwise inaccessible cliffs into a simple and safe site at which our guests can enjoy the natural beauty of this exceptionally unique location.

On a sun-drenched Dubrovnik summer day, our guests refresh themselves with cold drinks and bathing in the clear blue Adriatic. The steps that lead swimmers down to sea are provided with metal handrails for your safety. Those souls who are bit braver may be tempted to jump from “Lav” (The Lion), a rock from which many of the locals typically enter the sea. Those who are a bit hungry after their swim will find that we offer a variety of snacks, sweets, and ice cream.                                                 cafe buza

At the end of the day, there is no better place than Buža to watch the color of the sky and sea change as the sun sets over the calm Adriatic, while leisurely enjoying an aperitif and perhaps planning where to have dinner that evening.

And on a warm Dubrovnik summer night, Buža offers a discrete venue at which to relax with a digestif in the company of friends; or perhaps to share a quiet, romantic evening with someone special. Our intentionally unobtrusive music combines with our simple, informal, and professional service to insure a peaceful atmosphere that respects the privacy our guests.

Our guests are many and diverse: They come from different countries, speak different languages, are of different ages, and represent different customs. Yet we have noticed that they all seem united in at least this way: When they visit Buža, they seem to leave their cares behind them and...relax.

If you do not already know us, please come and experience for yourself the special atmosphere on the other side of the small buža.

Dobrodošli na Bužu! Welcome to Buža!
